Bye Vegas…

See you for CES2010 !
This year I spent quite a lot of time in the wynn, either for diner/fun times or for CES itself with Showstoppers and cntrstg being held there. It’s funny how every year another place gets the strong focus, I bet that next year if the huge resort being built south of the Bellagio is finished it will be the place to be.

Mattel’s Mind Flex

By concentrating you are able to change the intensity of your mind’s theta-wave and thus change the altitude of the ball… a button lets you move the ball left and right and by combining both controls you con complete the whole circuit.

Panasonic’s Touch Remote and Samsung’s Yahoo Widgets

P1100004.JPG

Spotted on Panasonic’s booth was this intriguing remote composed of a touchpad and a couple of buttons. I guess now that we have widgets on the TV, we can use a touchpad to navigate our TV.

Sony Vaio Netbooks

P1100013.JPG

I remember Sony was doing the same kink of laptops back in 2002 (the next door lab back in the days when I was doing research in Japan was using tens of those), so it’s kind of a reborn for that design now that netbooks seem to have evolved into a solid trend. Prices from 899USD to 1499USD (with an SSD drive), this piece of art comes in various colors and has a full-sized keyboard and a wonderful wide and high-definition screen. This is totally the kind of laptop I would have preferred carrying around during CES instead of my heavy MBPro. It also has built-in 3G but it only works on Verizon and there is no SIM-card inside, thus buying one and bringing it to Europe won’t work… and there is no date for European release yet… the world is not perfect after all !

LG Energy Tent

This solar tower by LG is not for sale (I asked!) but it’s being used to educate people on the use of clean energy. Inside the tower are tiny lockers where you can find plugs to recharge your mobile phone by using the energy from either the solar panel or the windmill.

Windows 7 the best Windows ever (not for Surface I guess)

Saw a demo, really not got convinced, the lady was trying to show how easy it is to join and leave a network group… like my parents will know what that is and why it’s good for… come on people try to be more end user focused, limit the number of clicks and make it simple!
Oh and by the way Windows 7 just fucked up Surface !

3D TVs everywhere

Central hall was definitely overwhelmed by 3D TVs. Each major manufacturer including Samsung LG, Sony had their TVs showcased and happy visitors wearing glasses to try them out.
As you might now, there is a lot going on in the 3D movie world right now, standards for content creation and delivery are being heavily discussed by working groups that got fairly active in 2008, technologies for content creation are now ready and in 2008 there were 10 movies done in 3D while this figure is expected to at least double in 2009.
Vendors are now trying to get this experience into the homes.
To achieve that there are currently 3 technologies:

  • Shutter glasses, like the one sold by Nvidia, by doubling the frequency of the display from 60Hz to 120Hz to get alternatively the image for the left and then for the right eye. Requires an emitter to send the sync signal and batteries in the glasses
  • Polarized glasses, like in good old Disneyworld movie theaters. No sync and batteries requires here.
  • beamsplitter surface on top of the screen that basically sends every next pixel to the other eye. This requires being really in front of the TV and reduces its resolution

While those are probably valid solutions for an enhanced movie experience (while I still regret there is no way to be *inside* the movie), they really *POORLY* apply to video games in my opinion. As a gamer I expect immersion in the game and the 3D effect itself is not what truly matters in terms of game experience, it’s the availability to get immersed into a 3D environment with free move within the game.
