San Francisco Rox (mostly)
Enjoyed a full week-end in San Francisco, and I must admit that I now understand why so many people feel enthusiastic about it. Firstly people here are really cool, everywhere they would openly come to you and start chatting, I really appreciate that! and the city is so nice, there’s a real architecture here with a soul, like the one we can feel in New-York, Paris or Kyoto, it’s somehow intimate as apart from the finance district it’s mostly about 2 to 3 floor wooden homes. I worked a lot - next time I’ll rent a car - but my piece of bravery was reaching the top of twin peaks departing from my hotel in North Van Ness - took me about 1.5hr. I especially enjoyed Japantown the streets there are so flourished and green, had diner there and I really somehow felt like back in time 6 years ago when I was living near Kyoto, have good memories from that time! Also fell in love with the sea lions ;).

CES look’n'feel
Amongst the thousand of stands I went through (”thousand” is not exagerating, neither is “went through”, I especially enjoyed the lifeware demos. Lifeware created a couple of virtual houses called under the name of Nextgen Home Experience filled with thousand of new generation home automation devices. Two thoughts :
- This rocks
- This hurts the wallet a lot
.
The whole story would retail around 20.000USD for a small house not including the TVs. But it really makes the home smarter. When you enter your house it recognizes you, it sets the ambiance to suit your preferences, it even can detect when you go to bed… Can’t wait to get a hold on this!

MyVU 3D glasses
I’ve been following MyVU for quite some time now and yesterday at CES they unveiled their latest goggles. And it’s a huge upgrade for about 300USD you get two independant VGA screens for each eye, and as they are independant they can do real 3d graphics! Can’t wait to have them supported by world of warcraft or second life ! Still the MyVU 3d support need some adaptation on the game software side and it sounds like they still have no partnerships heading that way.
Video editing with OSX
First time I tried to do some advanced video editing… and I failed with iMovie 08
. I wanted to mix some videos while keeping a same soundtrack from a primary video. Any idea how I can d that ?
Municipal WiFi is not dead - yet!
And proof is that Meraki networks, that we’ve been following for quite some time now, has raised an amazing 20M USD from Sequoia Capital, DAG Ventures, Northgate Capital and other previous investors (that was a 5M Series A with angels and Google).
Meraki has designed a small router which looks alot like the Fonera from Fon but relies on Meshed networking to provide a low cost pervasive WiFi network coverage. They have been working in the San-Francisco area for some time now and with that fund raise they will expand it to cover the full city of San-Francisco offering an ad-based free Internet service. They already have about 40 000 daily connections which is not bad…
I’m really curious to see if they can make a real business out of local ad services. Anyway they already have a real business model as their main income comes mostly from revenue share with large telcos for managing their network.

Maps and mobiles
![]()
24hrs after the launch of the Renaut Twingo Nokia edition featuring a Nokia 6110 Navigator, Nokia confirms that navigation has become key for his business… and buys Navteq 5 billion € (Bruno I hope you had stocks, that’s 35% more then the stock price). We are really living a “fight for content” where Operators, Device manufacturers and content providers fight to be te one to provide over the air the end user with dedicated mobile content and get paid for that. Just as with MobileTV, who will be able to control the access to this resource and monetize it, the broadcast company, the operator ? Maybe there will be a third player with dvb-h devices …
