PS3 WiiMOTE

without comments

Seems like Sony just applied for a patent of a next generation controler for its PS# that features 3D motion sensing, just like a WiiMote.

Game interface tracks the position of one or more game controllers in 3-dimensional space using hybrid video capture and ultrasonic tracking system

Looks a lot like a WiiMote to me, and if you watch the patent pictures the setup is also pretty similar. Apparently the ps3motes look like double lightsabers that can be split to be used one-hand or 2-hands. I guess everybody want to replace those complicated remotes with natural motion input devices!

Mind Mapping in SL

without comments

Just had a great demo by SL’s Dusan Writer of an extremly interesting inworld mind mapping tool (on remedy’s island).

While Gartner estimated in 2007 that by 2011 over 50 Million people will have a “Second Life” in one of the various online worlds (which if you think about it is about the size of the French populations), it’s pretty interesting to see how use cases develop and new usages expand making it possible to actually reach those figures. While Linden Lab’s SL got a lot of exposure and hype as a marketing tool, it’s only now that we see real use cases around collaborative working and real “get together” habits being developed in a useful way.
Only in a 3D environment such as SL could you have such an awesome tool representing in 3D the participant’s ideas and bringing in inspiration sources from the web (i.e. here a demo about “cheese”), and to have just participated at a demo of this tool I can only tell how inspiring it is to be in that environment to open up your mind and be creative. If only the PC would disappear to leave the space for full immersion in the stars…

Virtual Reality by Nintendo

without comments

Back in 1995 - those units called “Virtual Boy” still retail on Ebay at 139€. Those were using Monochrome display made of blue and green LEDs. More on its wikipedia page. Trying to be strong and not to buy one!

VR-WEAR’s SL viewer RC3

without comments

Release day today for VR-WEAR with a huge announce, we finally got OSX support in our RC3, and it works great (finally I don’t have to bootcamp under XP anymore to test-drive the software). For those who don’t know what I’m talking about, VR-WEAR has modified Second Life’s viewer to add support for your computer webcam and uses it to analyse your head motion and attitudes and paste them live on your avatar’s head.
More details on the release are available on sl.vr-wear.com along with the downloads URLs.

Revival 1994 - Timex DataLink

without comments

Yesterday while doing some research, I stumbled upon the “TIMEX” brand name which brought back lots of memories from the early 90’s… This watch, the Timex DataLink, was the result of a JV between Timex and Microsoft and had a sensor on the top casing and could talk with your PC through a software having your CRT monitor blink. That was probably the nerdyiest watch ever ! Check out wikipedia for more infos.

Running - Aiming at March half-marathon

without comments

Picture 1-9
As some of you might now - Franck (VR-WEAR’s CTO) pushed me into signing in the Paris half-marathon in March - which must have been some kind of revenge for me getting him in WoW. Anyway started some training aiming at a 1h40 on March, and this is getting good, yesterday was my first time breaking the 10km distance ! (Running had never been my sport before). I played safe by not going or 172bpm at anytime but there is definitely some huge room for improvements there!
