Connected things from the past

Will music disappear from your hard drive ?
I had an argument today with some of my co-workers about the way music is going to be consumed in the next few years.
Basically today the trend is to store as much MP3s as possible, tag them, arrange them, love them, cherish them… My vision is that within the next few years with connectivity becoming ubiquitous (unlimited HSXPA data plans & co) the market will tend to online (free) music services such as Last.FM (just reactivated my account and it’s so cool !)
What’s your opinion ?

BT enters Second Life

Cnet reports that BT has launched 3 new services is his island “Area 21″ as demonstration service for their FTTH network. Basically it’s made of 2 machines, one to pass phone calls to real phones, another one to send SMSes and a teleconferencing service letting people inworld hold conferences with colleagues that would be on the road.
If you have used the voice system in SL, you know it’s still crap but still it’s a smart move!

Remote command beta
This remote, the Acoustic Research ARRU449, does it all thanks to its built-in WiFi connection it can grab data online like epg, weather etc…. and can by the way switch on your TV. I’m pretty amused by this device as I just got myself a Logitech universal remote configured through my PC and found it aleady so complicated … like poutting a CPU a screen and a speaker would help easing the end user’s life …
At this rate I’d rather go for Bang&Olufsen’s !

UPnP media stream
At 3GSM this year i had this demo on the Cisco Linksys booth of a Nokia N93 phone streaming its pictures to a Linksys DP-1600 Kiss player. I was quite amazed becaus those things are still pretty rare… finding two device UPnP compliant with the ability to interact might sound something normal but actually it’s the one and only demo I ever saw working… Now the Linksys DP-1600 is out and of course it arrived on our demo corner @ WaveStorm. (Admire the awesome Full HD TV
)
SL-Messenger.com beta launch
As some of you might now, I participated during this summer to a small project around Second Life. Basically I’ve been exploring the metaverse for some time now, trying to understand better its inhabitants, their expectations, their frustrations, and gazing and the magnificent stuff they were able to create. When McKinsey started the VVC competition, I thought it was time to dig more into that platform and see more in details what opportunities the metaverse could bring (btw I did not join that competition as I did not have much time for this project and preferred to rely on professional developers to have this thing up and running fast, and putting money in the project was against competition rules).
We had that frustration about having hard time finding back where we’ve been who we’ve met and letting online friends reach us inworld.
We reached the conclusion that there is a bridge missing between the Online World and the Metaverse, and we wanted to provide that bridge to the Second Life communities, so we created SL-Messenger.com which was released in beta yesterday evening during Metaversed First Fridays where I took part in my first inworld panel, really cool experience.
Sl-Messenger binds the web and the Metaverse together.

Simply grab inworld a communications device, your watch, and wear it. This device will take notes of your current position, the places you’ve been to and the peoples you’ve met - and in total respect with your privacy (offline mode available
).
An online service will let you advertise on your blog your status and position on your web page (check on the right pane of this blog) (an API is available to create dedicated widgets if you wish) and you will be able to see in one glimpse without needing to go inworld if your friends are online and join them in one click.
Offering friendship has never been so easy, just check on your travelbook the people you met and offer them friendship… a watch will be immediately sent to them.
Finally you can send message from the web to someone currently inworld and have it delivered through his watch.
SL-Messenger is meant as an open project so please try it, use it, help us enhance it!
Join now!
Thanks to AyakashiTEC for releasing the project on time, you really managed to grab the soul of that project and make it work and contributed greatly to it
(and handle the thousands of lines of code :p )
Btw, if anyone can do sth with the terrible graphics, I’ll really appreciate :p
Update :The video of the event is now available on slcn.tv.

SpotCoffee network expanding
As I just said previously, Spotcoffee took on the legacy of WaveStorm WiFi management solutions (along with its client pool) to continue the expansion on the WiFi HotSpot market. Remember Quickspot ? They took it and have it evolve in v2.0 with an awesome online website, quickspot.biz where you can mesure their footprint in France… awesome work, guys !

SpotCoffee on TV journal
As you may now, Spotcoffee is a Spin-Off of WaveStorm created when we evolved last year from a WiFi management solutions provider to a enabler of the Internet of Things. Our assets were thus gathered in Spotcoffee which is now a standalone company run by Jean-Charles who was a co-founder of WaveStorm. Yesterday they had an awesome coverage at TV news on national channel TF1. Check this out:
