Is J2ME dead ? - iPhone the gold standard for mobile web

Just kidding
Thomas, dont runsh on the comment field ;).
But there is a real trend here… that has become possible thanks to Apple’s iPhone AJAX enables Safari browser. Until now the mobile web was a pain, either you had to stick to one-dimension static web pages (just like minitel) or install (if you had the skills to) some fancy rich application (java/flash/stz…) that would somehow try to show one kind of information or vertical function (track bank accounts, golf card…) on a more pleasant way… but there was no such thing as a browser.
Opera was a first step in that direction with their XML widget framework, but Safari just is the first one to offer you a rich experience of mobile web browsing + an intuitive input mechanism : your finger (remember, the mouse is better than the keyboard, so is a touch screen compared to the tiny-winy mobile keyboard).
Going on Facebook on an iPhone is realistic while going on wap works - but it’s still a pain
If you are working on the mobile business keep en aye on what’s happening here !

Netvibes on iPhone

Thanks Tariq for letting me try that.. the result is awesome ! Url is blurred as it’s still private. I’ll update the post on iphony.fr when it becomes public.
Dresden museum on SL
And the man started to reproduce the world….
At least I must say this work that has been done to reproduce the Dresden museum in SL is simply awesome. You really can walk in the museum, looking at the paintings… it’s just like in real life. When you click on a painting you get a notecard with rough information (too bad they wouldn’t add a shot bio of the painter and some insights about his work…). Head to Dresden Gallery !

Chumby arrives
Cheapedia has posted a video of unboxing of one of the first “final” chumby. I reported already a couple of times about that device claiming to be the first physical widget. Featuring a touch screen and a Flash interface, it has WiFi and can be fed with plenty of fun widgets. The packaging and device look awesome… I can’t wait to grab one !
Fring has become impressive
I tried Fring a couple of months (years?) ago and it was a really deceptive experience. At that time was was only a Symbian client that was really slowing down everything. I only has Gprs which made VoIP impossible and finally could barely get to connect to anything… But things changed ! First of all let me congratulate the Fring team for their 12M$ series B, good job, and as I can see it’s really deserved !
I installed yesterday evening the client on my Samsung SGH-i600 Windows mobile 5. It has WiFi and upt to HSDPA capabilities and I have an unlimited HSDPA plan. I chose to use only 3G/HSDPA for the test. Installed the soft in a couple of sec, registered my MSN/Gtalk/Twitter/Skype/SIP accounts (no ICQ… havent used it for ages..). It logged in in a couple of seconds and tweets and IMs started flowing. I tried a few calls using SIP (freephonie account) & Skype Out, sound quality was poor but audible… but still it worked flawlessly !
Is that the end of operator’s charging talk time ?
Mobitrends available for iPhone

I just installed the iwphone wordpress plugin and now, as you can see, Mobitrends displays like a charm on an iPhone! If you want to check it out by yourself, simply point your iPhone browser to www.mobitrends.com or grab iPhoney an iPhone browser emulator for OSX.
Mosh - UGC by Nokia
Mosh which stads for “MObile SHaring” is a user-generated-content (UGC) sharing initiative by Nokia. It focuses mostly on the fact that you can automatically synchronize your mobile content and share it. I must say I’m a bit puzzled by this initiative… in my case I would not exchange vpod/flickr with mosh and imho browsing and creating content from a mobile phone reminds a poor experience quality-wise. Anyway it seems that as usual the social features (bookmarking, rating & co) have a strong effect on the happy few early testers ;). A wap mobile version is available at mosh.nokia.mobi.

Unlocking your iPhone
I have my iPhone coming from the states right now (bought it on eBay…) so I made some research about how it can be hacked and found quite a few useful resources.
First of all, activation : under OSX you get iPat which does the trick in one click !
Then unjailing : a bit longer but still pretty reasonable : can be done in one hour following this tutorial.
Finally : using a Bouygues Telecom SIM, just follow this tutorial.
I’ve started writing down all the things I find for the iPhone on that blog : iPhony.fr.
Come to me, iPhone!

1664 Instant Pression
Highly disappointing… it’s simply the same pressure system that has been in Guiness cans for ages, only it has no influence on the 1664… no scum no nothing… I had this advertisement for the new pression system in front of my offices for weeks so I had to give it a try but it really isn’t worth the buz !

Sony Ebook reader
I received on friday a sony ebook reader. This devices is based on the E-Ink technology from eink, also known as “E-Paper” and lets you read your ebooks in a much more pleasant way. Actually I had a few gigs of those and reading them on a usual TFT screen was really a pain… and quite often when I order a book on Amazon it can take ages until it gets delivered.
After a couple of hours toying with the device, my thoughts is that the device itself is awesome… the touch of the metal brushed casing along with the soft high quality plastic skin is really enjoyable. The user interface is really cool as it memorizes where you stopped in your reading & lets you change font size easily. The device has an SD + Memorystick reader which is cool (I have no memorystyck but really a lot of SD Cards). There are a couple of drawbacks though : the original file format is called BBeB and is proprietary, no OSX software, I’m using parallels and finally the Sony Connect Store software really sucks and is a pale imitation of iTunes. Last but not least, you cannot view PDF A4 ebooks out of the box… the device will not split the pages and let you increase the font size enough to make it readable. The workaround I found is to convert to RTF before uploading, then it works like a charm.
Anyway I’m really enjoying it
Oh and by the way it’s only available in the US… Got mine on ebay for about 150€ which is quite a decent price for such a g33k toy.
