Apple TV updates

without comments

Steve Jobs was talking today at D conference, one sentence especially caught my attention :

What every body has tried is that coming from computer market, you think about getting content from your computer to your TV. I am not sure that is what consumers want. More we think about it, they are like peas. We think the content from the Internet is the real play

Looks like Ki’i in heading in the same direction… The real challenge about contents on the Internet is being able to fin the content that really matters to the user.
Here is a preview of Kii-frame.com to see how we are doing that.

Ubiquiti Powerstation

without comments

Ubiquiti has been well-known for a while for providing high-power (400mW) WiFi cards.
Remember, in many countries this is not legal, in France it’s limited to 100mW.
Remember 2 : using directional antenna is legal (think Fon and Fontennas) as the emitted power remain the same and is just more focused in one direction.
Anyway, thay just released the PowerStation (spec) : a powerful 400 mW radio with a built-in 18dBi antenna and running OpenWRT.
The device look awesome, slim and sexy.
Product Ps Allviews
Devices are available at 160USD/unit.
By the way I’m amazed by the OpenWRT project. I saw it start a few years ago and now it’s become better than most commercial OSes.

Palm Foleo

with one comment

Palm-Foleo-440Palm just announced its latest device and, guess what, it isn’t a Smartphone ! It’s called Foleo and it’s a small (10″ screen) lightweight and ultra mobile (5h autonomy) convenient (immediate sleep/resume), mobile (WiFi/Bluetooth) connected thing. The device should retail around 500USD. I guess I’d really enjoy having one when traveling or attending conferences. No words about the OS used. I hope they won’t close it and rather take the Nokia option with an Opensource system such as Maemo used in Nokia N700 and N800 tablets. It’s pretty fun t see Palm go into the ultra-portable business. The way they are describing this device sounds like a mere PDA with a keyboard although I’m sure it much more like a PC, I guess it’s called marketing and segmentation but still let’s hope that this device won’t end up as a nice try.
Update : DailyWireless says it’s runnign Linux, good news !

Patching Apple TV

without comments

Patchstickum2-1

It’s now almost possible to patch your favorite Apple TV without opening it up ! The solutions was developed by the Awkward TV team and is codenamed Patchstick. Basically is a very tough process where from an intel-based MAC OSX you can create a bootable USB key and have your Apple TV boot on it and patch the Apple TV OS. Only one bad point : you need a boot.efi file only available on bitorrent (it’s on the Apple TV HD but you don’t want to open it up….). Anyway I did it and thus so can you! This will let you play divx, read RSS feeds, listen to webradios and really unleash your Apple TV potential ! An SDK is now also available to develop extensions to your favorite Set-top box !

Ki’i in the press

with one comment

Remember the Ki’i ? It’s an internal project we first publicly presented at Innovate Europe 2007, last month in Zaragoza and which is based on one of our latest PXA WiFi platform. Looks like the press loves it! we just got since a few days a lot of coverage in the news (both printed and online) such as a:c europe, 01 Net, pdafrance, w3sh, erenumenique, bestofmicro or next week in “Valeurs actuelles”.
Things are accelerating for us, as you may know WaveStorm focuses on creating wireless platforms and making things connectable and interoperable wirelessly. So I think we will be able to announce shortly some deals with major consumer electronics brands interested in the Ki’i ;). To see which brand will be printed on ki’i splash screen check on the ki’i blog in the next few weeks ;).

PSP Videoconferencing

without comments

Dailywireless just reported about an initiative from BT who developed an exclusive application of videoconferencing based on Sony’s PSP plus their latest add-on, a small camera that plugs on the USB port on top of the device. Watch the video for a small tour of how PSP users can talk with BT’s PC & 3G phones users !
As I always say, mobility isn’t only about mobile phones anymore !

Kodak moments

without comments

Funny ad from kodak found on Youtube

I love it “booyaaa!”, the only thing I regret is that althogh they have a wonderful view about the sharing of pictures… in their vision it’s got to be “all-Kodak” to really happen. No openess to third parties services, if you don’t have a Kodak camera porsting pictures to Kodak EasyShare and a Wireless digital Kodak frame… then all those promises aren’t for you…

Joey or Aladdino reloaded

without comments

Servicesmobiles and GigaOM just reported on Joey, a services developed by Mozilla Labs that lets you mark pages from within Firefox and then make them available on Mozilla servers ready for mobile browsing through a dedicated mobile app installed on your preferred device. Unfortunately I could not try it … I never received the confirmation email. If anyone could make a video or a few pics I’d be hapy to blog them ;).
Reminds me of Aladdino back in 2001 where we were synchronizing informations channels from the web to our mobile device to access them when we’re away… fun to see that 5 years later the problems remain the same !
