UPnP on devices

without comments

As you may know, I moved to a new Windows-based mobile and I am missing mainly two things :

  • A J2ME engine to run usual java apps - although there is that awesome .NET framework, still most of the available apps are in Java - this might change as time goes but until then… I found this JVM called Mysaifu and although I can install it alright, I’m not that sure about its support of J2ME.
  • The UPnP functionalities. You might wonder what good it is for - and I’d rather agree : nothing is really taking any clear benefit from UPnP but still sometimes it’s fun to send a video stream from your mobile to your UPnP-enabled set-top-box. So I found the solutions with this expansion pack from Microsoft

USB over 802.11n

Belkin Net Usb 1
I should create a new category called USB_over_xxx as the number of available tech mix really increases faster than the ability for the companies announcing them to deliver them in stores… anyway, Belkin announced its network USB hub for this summer. Basically you’ll need to install a piece of software in your PC or MAC and this will bind it to the networ hub, creating virtual USB ports.

Just saw this awesome plugin for wordpress by Andy Moore which really does the trick : Automatic mobile phone & PDA detection, Post & upload from your mobile, Supports display and posting of comments, Supports AdMob mobile advertising … I guess I’ll start wondering if I should not move to wordpress one day or another… it really looks like it’s so much more powerful than Typepad…

Look around you and imagine what you could do if it were wireless

without comments

When I’m presenting i’m used to saying that, just like see your coffee machine? it could send you an email to tell you there’s no more water which would save you 15m walk to fill a bottle etc etc.. but some guys really took it literally. They saw a fish tank and said : let’s put some WiFI ! And there you get the Wi-Aquarium ! Which lets you watch your fish via webcam, feed them remotely and adjust heat, lights and filter online. The aquarium will even send you an e-mail to report aquarium status.

25% More WiFi Hotspot this year

without comments

This figure comes out of an ABI Research study which estimates that this year 900 000 WiFi routers will be shipped to create new hotspots. US and EU still is 72% of the market but Asia is starting to move. Europe is even the market leader with 70 000 locations… awesome when you think that WiFi is mainly a US technology. China is going much slower than expected … which opens up a real business opportunity as cheap technical solutions have appeared to manage HotSpot markets (check WaveStorm’s µHotSpot and SiteNexus used by Spotcoffee). Hospitality counts 46 000 hotspots world wide putting it as the main provider of such service.

WaveStorm MAC Adresses !

without comments

Picture 6
WaveStorm has a bunch of 16 million MAC addresses reserved at IEEE ;) That should be enough for 2007 I guess ;). Pretty fun to see our name in IEEE Listings ! If you see a MAC address on your network starting with 00-1C-3D, it’s one of our product !
