Windows Mobile/CE going beyond Smartphones OSes

I’ve been taking a closer look at Windows Mobile 6 and I must confess I was impressed. We are very far now from the first versions of Windows Mobile not only because they added tons of interoperability features, but mostly because it finally became a real OS.
When talking about WiFi embedded platforms, I only used to cosider using Linux or VxWorks, but now that it is really getting multitask ( and can manage over 30 000 processes), kernel mode drivers, and kernel based process management, it now is getting ready for devices that don’t necessary have a keyboard and a screen !
Windows is really moving forward in the embedded world, along with the anounce of the Microsoft Robot Lab, it’s getting clear that it’s time for them to try and take control of this era. Remember that today we have 4 billion connected machines … by 2010 there will be 20 billion , amongst which 18 billion will be embedded devices. This is what Microsoft is targeting.
By the way if you are wondering what exactly the difference is between Windows CE, Mobile and XPe (embedded) check this great video from inside Microsoft HQ.

WaveStorm moving to new offices
After 1,5 year in a nice garage near Montparnasse, it was time for us to move to a more functional location where I can hold meeting in good conditions and where the growing engineering team would be more at ease. We just found a nice 210m2 offices at “Porte de Versailles” near TDF, Qualcomm, Aquaboulvard, Orange … check the video tour and the pics !
Skype available @ Three

Zennstrom just announced that Three, the UK-based telco operator has integrated unlimited Skype phone calls to its new plans called “X-Series”. Available vith Nokia N73 and Sony Ericsson W950i. The X-Series plans also include Y! Go and Google mobile services, as well as Slingbox, Orb (a multimedia content service), MSN Messenger and eBay.
I heard that Skype for Symbian is ready since quite some time… almost one year! I guess the Skype team has been waiting for revenue sharing agreements on the Skype Out and Skype In services with operators to launch it.
MAKE your own stuff
MAKE is a US magazine specializing in DIY (Do It Yourself) and this month they just released a 115$ MP3 player as a kit … amazing ! OK, it’s more expensive than an Ipod but still as a g33k I’d love to show this saying ” I did it myself”

HSBC using token to access online services
Amazing, a regular bank (HSBC) offering to their customers high-grade security to access their online accounts ! when I discovered that yesterday evening I was really so amazed I had to share that on mobitrends, although this hasn’t very much to do with mobility. But knowing the cost and the complexity of putting up this kind of projects (including the process of giving the tokens, revoking them …) I’m amazed that a bank is doing that for their regular customers ! Even with all my pro accounts none has that kind of service which is really an asset in terms of confidentiality ! Those solutions could be key to secure online payments too … any way it opens up so many opportunities …
The Beaujolais nouveau just arrived
And we are enjoying at the “Café du Métro”, rue de Rennes near St Sulpice with the WaveStorm and Spotcoffee team who provides free WiFi in this café.
Just got a first taste of the Beaujolais and it’s spicy and fresh
delicious ! I guess Christophe will give real comments about it later on his blog ;).

Cutting down the last wire
I just read on Yahoo! news that “wireless recharging” is on the go at MIT. There isn’t any workling prototype yet, and still no proof that such technology will be harmless for people. The previous experiments turned wrong as most of the energy used to create the electromagnetic field was dispelled, but they with this new approach only half of the sent energy would be lost.
Well, this all seems like wireless power is not for tomorrow !
Robot fighter
I just spotted this video of the Samsung war robot that was developed jointly with South Korea University. It includes “two cameras: one for day-time and one for infrared night vision, zooming capabilities, a speaker for notifying the intruder, sophisticated pattern recognition to detect the difference between humans/trees, and a 5.5mm machine-gun.” It should be available late 2007 at 200 000US$ per unit to watch the DMZ between south and north Korea …. frightening! DefenseReview doesn’t yet know what type of machine gun the robot employs, but it’s being reported that the machine gun is currently chambered in 5.56mm NATO (5.56×45mm NATO) caliber. It doesn’t say if it has WiFi though …
If it comes to you asking “… Sarah Connor ?”, remember, the right answer is “NO”.
VpodTV launched
Vpod just launched its service this afternoon. As you may have noticed, I’ve been using for a while Vpod.TV as a beta user and I could enjoy its differences such as a great online movie maker tool. Anyway I’m very happy for Rodrigo to see his project going public ! Rodrigo, I still remember your presentation at the Mobile Monday a few months ago, I’m looking forward for this side to go live !
Good luck !
Btw, if you missed that, Vpod is backed by Innovacom and a few impressive “Angels” such as Fon’s CEO Martin Varsavski.
