James Bond’s cellphone
I just saw the first mobile-phone-watch… impressive ! Although it’s worth 650$, must be a pain to dial a number, and has a small 100 contacts memory, I still would love to toy with one and pretend being James Bond
The only thing I’m not sure is .. is it a hoax or is it true ?
Free Hardware
You know about Free Software ? What about free hardware !? A few months ago Sun Microsystems released its OpenSPARC T1 processor core… and the community gazed upon it and started the srisc project !
One of the main purposes of Simply RISC was to keep the S1 Core environment as simple as possible to encourage developers: most of the simulation and synthesis activities are now performed with simple push-button scripts and system requirements are very easy to meet.
The environment can run on any Unix/Linux box and no commercial tools are required, since both simulation and synthesis of the Verilog files of the design can be performed using the free software Icarus Verilog.
Due to its Wishbone-compliant bus interface the S1 Core can be easily interconnected to several cores freely available on OpenCores.org to build up a System-on-a-Chip.
Due to the collaborative nature of the GPL license Simply RISC plans to add new features to the S1 Core and test them extensively over the next months with the help of the community.
Humm … yummy ! It really gives me so many ideas ! To see more, check opencores.

Starbucks France chooses WaveStorm
You might have seen that on the interview I gave to CanardWifi last week, Starbucks France has chosen to install WaveStorm HotSpot management solutions µHotSpot & SiteNexus to provide WiFi in their cafés. WaveStorm and Starbucks teams made a flawless integration to the Micros Fidelio machines enabling the hostess to provide
a 30 minutes wifi for 2€ by pressing one single button on their terminal.
I’m very proud of this service as i think it’s really good value for money, low installation costs, easy to use, flawless service, enhanced reporting… there will be more to come soon about the µHotspot & SiteNexus tandem !

Free hotspot with WorldSpot.Net
Thomas pointed out worldspot.net, a free online hotspot management service providing:
- Total connection time allowed.
- Total upload volume allowed
- Total download volume allowed
- Total upload+download volume allowed
- Maximum upload rate
- Maximum download rate
- Limitation reset time: All the above limitations can be reseted after a specified period of time from the first connection or the previous reset. This allows users to connect 1h per day, or limit to 1gb per hour…
It is based on free software chillispot and on you upgrading your WRT router with dd-wrt firmware.
I tried it and apart from te fact that setting-up the whole stuff must be a pain for a non-professionnal, the features seem to lack eanough reporting modules, and look a bit like a geek stuff.
Anyway, it’s a nice initiative, but it really cannot be compared to professional hotspot management solutions.

Freescale sold for $17.6b
Freescale, a semiconductor fabless manufacturer providing advanced RF Chips including UWB & pre-802.11n which was spin-offed from motorolla in mid-2003 was sold last thursday to private equity firms led by BlackStone Group for $17.6 … the biggest technology buyout ever !
Freescale says they have made more than 17 billion semiconductors, embedded in automobiles, computer networks, communications infrastructure, office buildings, factories, industrial equipment, tools, mobile phones, home appliances and consumer products.
I believe very much that technologies like the one provided by Freescale are going to be implanted and every single device by 2010… opening up on a huge 50 billion devices market ! No wonder that company valuation is so high …

Flash on Windows mobile device
I just read this news on Flash Devices, and I had to report that, as I’ve been talking a lot about Flash & Flash Lite, and as I’m pretty convinced that Flash can bring more user-friendly UIs to the mobile world …
I’m very happy to announce that we now have a preview release of Flash Lite 2.1 for Windows Mobile 5.0 devices - including Smartphones and Pocket PCs. You can get all of the details on Adobe Labs including release and developer notes, documentation and installers.
We also have created a new discussion forum, Flash Lite: Windows Mobile where you can post your questions about developing Flash Lite content for these devices.
Some things you should know:
- This is a preview release of Flash Lite 2.1 for Windows Mobile 5.0. We’re providing this to the broad developer community to allow you to test and provide feedback before it becomes final.
- We’re working on some new device profiles for Flash Professional 8 to allow you to test your content. These should be available within the next few weeks.
- Both standalone and ActiveX plug-in are supported so you can view SWF content either way.
- We’re working on some sample files for you to reference and will have those available soon.
Got a PSP !
Well … I had an excuse : we needed one at WaveStorm, so i happily bought one on ebay (160€ including 1GB MemoryStick & Spiderman 2 UMD in the box)… and it rocks ! I immediately hacked it and installed WifiSniffer, this soft rocks, it lets you check on the available WiFi networks right from you PSP ! I’m so excited about all these WiFi devices popping around, so many nice services can be deployed
on those … so many opportunities !
Btw: I was home when I took this screenshot … all the “WANADOO-XXX” stuff are Orange’s ADSL boxes… the spectrum really is getting overcrowded in Paris!
